Umanism represents Chiara Bersani, Silvia Gribaudi and Giulio D'Anna inside the Between the Seas - A Mediterranean Artists' Collective at APAP 2017 New York
As a company that spreads Italian culture, particularly performing arts, across the globe, Umanism participated in the Between the Seas open call for APAP.
We decided to work on a proposal of dance projects that showcases Italian creativity through movement. Three italian contemporary choreographers - Chiara Bersani, Silvia Gribaudi and Giulio D'Anna - construct new viewpoints on the body and society.
The common language of these artists is the action/reaction between the natural body transformation and the ambient world. All of them are truly representative of a "movement" very important in Italian/Mediterranean contemporary performing arts where the body is used as the higher liberating act in a strict society dazzled by a common aesthetic and eager to own its personal dimension. I believe there is a very special connection between the body, a body and calling the Mediterranean home.
Chiara Bersani is author or performer. Her work is especially focused on the concept of “Political Body”. She is affected by“Osteogenesis Imperfecta”. This syndrome was her inspiration to study the deep political meaning that a body can assume when simply connecting with the society. Her repertoire has projects produced between 2012 and 2016.

Silvia Gribaudi is a choreographer and performer, she works throughout Italy, Europe and Canada. Her Over 60 Project focuses on women over 60 in creating a new understanding about how age affects the body. The project is developed through a period of residence and meeting with women over 60 of the area involved, who want to deal with a community experience, experimenting with movement through a free and creative expression with their bodies. This will enable them to gain a deeper approach with themselves and with the others through dance, recognizing themselves in a group, in a particular place and context.

Giulio D'Anna is choreographer and performer. As a choreographer, he is interested in the fusion of different theatre languages with “dramatic bodies”. In his works he seeks for translation of drama as genre into a contemporary theatre language. Drama, desire and humor are key words for his productions. He works as an independent maker in between The Netherlands and Italy and, as performer, he works with NB|projects. In the last years his dance productions have been shown internationally, making him the second Dutch Dance exporter in 2014.
